Betis on the Prowl: January Striker Hunt Underway at Benito Villamarín

Real Betis are prioritizing a forward signing in the January transfer window, with Bakambu's AFCON absence and expiring contract accelerating their search plans.

With the winter transfer window looming, Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo is already plotting to beef up the Verdiblancos’ attacking options for the second half of the season.

Forward Line Focus

The brass at Betis have done their sums and reckon the attack needs a proper boost when the January window swings open. It’s a bit of a no-brainer, really, considering their current striker situation:

  • Cucho Hernández is firing on all cylinders with five goals, showing why they brought him back from his MLS adventure
  • Bakambu has been limited to mostly Europa League minutes, chipping in with a couple of goals
  • Chimy Ávila and Pablo García provide alternative options but aren’t out-and-out number nines

The situation with Bakambu is particularly telling. The Congolese forward will be off to the Africa Cup of Nations in December, leaving a hole in the squad for several weeks. More significantly, his contract expires next summer with no renewal in sight. Talk about your double whammy!

Winter Window Strategy

Betis have previous when it comes to shrewd January business. They’ve pulled off some right Bobby Dazzlers in past winter windows:

  • Johnny Cardoso was fast-tracked when Guido Rodríguez got crocked
  • Pablo Fornals, Antony, and even Cucho himself were all January arrivals who quickly established themselves

Fajardo’s team are looking to repeat the trick, potentially advancing a summer signing if the right opportunity presents itself. The World Cup on the horizon could work in their favor, with players desperate for minutes potentially becoming available.

Youth Over Experience

Unlike when they signed 32-year-old Bakambu as a short-term solution, Betis are now targeting a younger striker with long-term potential. This suggests a shift in transfer policy toward more sustainable squad building.

Left-Back Also on the Radar

While a striker remains the priority, Betis are also monitoring the left-back position. Ricardo Rodríguez’s contract expires in June, and although they have cover with Junior returning from injury and Valentín Gómez as a utility option, the position remains on their radar for future reinforcement.

The Seville side’s proactive approach to the transfer market could be crucial in their push for European qualification this season. With the right January additions, they’ll be looking to give the big boys a proper run for their money in the second half of the campaign.
