Depor Eye Double Swoop: Luengo and Antoñito Top January Shopping List

Deportivo La Coruña set to bolster defence and attack in January with Oier Luengo and Antoñito Cordero emerging as prime targets for the winter window.

Deportivo La Coruña are gearing up for a busy January transfer window as they look to patch up their injury-hit squad with two key signings already in the crosshairs.

Defence First Priority

With injuries to Ximo Navarro and Sergio Escudero leaving the backline thinner than a supermodel on a juice cleanse, sporting director Fernando Soriano has made defensive reinforcement his top priority.

Oier Luengo from Real Oviedo has emerged as the standout candidate for the Galicians. The 27-year-old centre-back ticks all the boxes for Antonio Hidalgo’s side:

  • Good ball-playing ability
  • Impressive physical presence
  • The intensity that Hidalgo demands from his players

Luengo’s situation at Oviedo makes him a viable target, having barely featured under either Paunovic or current boss Luis Carrión this season. The interest isn’t new either - Depor have been keeping tabs on him for months.

Wing Wizard Wanted

It’s not just at the back where Deportivo want to strengthen. They’re also in the market for a winger, with Newcastle United’s Antoñito Cordero leading the race for that position.

Both potential deals have reportedly been simmering away for weeks, with only the green light needed from the parent clubs to get things moving. Newcastle are understood to prefer a straight loan for Antoñito, while Oviedo are pushing for a loan-to-buy arrangement with options for Luengo.

Timing Is Everything

These moves couldn’t come at a better time for Depor, who are looking to solidify their position in Segunda División after promotion last season. The brass at Riazor clearly believe these two additions could be just what the doctor ordered to give them a proper boost for the second half of the campaign.

With negotiations already at an advanced stage, Deportivo supporters might not have to wait long after the January window opens to see new faces at Abanca-Riazor.
