Liverpool Eyeing Klopp Return as Slot Struggles After £486m Splurge

Liverpool's owners reportedly considering bringing Jürgen Klopp back as interim manager if Arne Slot is sacked, with Luis Enrique their long-term target.

Anfield bosses are reportedly considering a sensational return for Jürgen Klopp as a stopgap solution if current manager Arne Slot’s nightmare run continues.

Crisis Mode at Anfield

Things have gone proper Pete Tong for Liverpool lately. The Reds are suffering their worst run of form since 1953, with an absolutely shocking nine defeats in their last 12 matches. PSV Eindhoven’s 4-1 demolition job at Anfield was just the latest embarrassment in a run that’s seen Liverpool lose three consecutive matches by three goals – something that hasn’t happened at the club for 72 years.

Despite this horror show, Slot insists he still has backing from above, telling reporters: “I have much support from above.”

The Klopp Plan

According to The Sun, Liverpool’s American owners Fenway Sports Group are weighing up their options, with a potential interim role for Klopp on the table if they pull the trigger on Slot:

  • Klopp, now Global Head of Football at Red Bull, would potentially step in until season’s end
  • This short-term appointment would be a bridge to their actual target
  • Luis Enrique, currently at PSG, is reportedly FSG’s preferred long-term option

Financial Fears Mounting

What’s really got the suits at FSG sweating is the financial implications of this collapse. After splashing around £486 million on transfers, including approximately £150 million on Alexander Isak alone, they’re facing a potential disaster:

  • Missing Champions League qualification would cost the club over £60 million
  • The massive summer investment was meant to keep Liverpool competing at the highest level
  • Instead, they’re in danger of falling completely out of Europe’s elite competition

Slot, who only replaced the beloved Klopp in summer 2024, maintains he’s not feeling the pressure, claiming: “It’s not the first time I’ve found myself in a difficult situation, but it’s time we turned things around.”

The question now is whether he’ll get that chance, or if Liverpool’s owners will reach for the phone and ask their old gaffer to come back and sort out this right old mess.
