Madrid Win 16-Club Tug of War for Logroñés Wonderkid Rezola

Real Madrid have secured a January deal for 19-year-old attacking midfielder Manex Rezola, beating off competition from 15 Spanish clubs and a Saudi Arabian side.

Los Blancos Swoop for Semi-Pro Gem in Rare Mid-Season Move

In a transfer that’s proper out of character for the European giants, Real Madrid have agreed a deal to sign 19-year-old attacking midfielder Manex Rezola from UD Logroñés in January, pinching him from under the noses of 15 other Spanish clubs and even a wealthy Saudi Arabian side.

The San Sebastián-born talent, who’s been turning heads in Spain’s fourth tier (Segunda Federación), will join Real Madrid C once the paperwork is sorted after his final match for Logroñés on December 21st against SD Logroñés.

Why This Move Is Different

Madrid rarely dip into the semi-professional leagues for teenage talent mid-season, making this move particularly noteworthy. Club insiders have admitted “it’s something Madrid almost never does” - a testament to the special qualities they’ve spotted in the youngster.

What’s got the Madrid scouts all excited, then?

  • Left-footed attacking midfielder who can play across the front line
  • Exceptional dribbling ability and offensive vision
  • Decisive final pass that unlocks defences
  • Strong character and competitiveness beyond his years
  • Started 83% of matches this season with 2 goals

Beating Serious Competition

The competition for Rezola’s signature was absolutely bananas. Among the 15 Spanish clubs that made approaches were:

  • Athletic Club (who tried to bring him back to the Basque Country)
  • Girona, Osasuna, Cádiz
  • Championship sides like Oviedo and Sporting

Most eye-opening was interest from a Saudi Arabian top-flight club that offered an unprecedented seven-year contract with plans to loan him to an Italian giant’s reserve team. Proper bread and honey (money) on the table, that.

From Humble Beginnings

Rezola’s story isn’t your typical elite academy tale. He developed his skills at Antiguoko and Vasconia before finding his feet at Logroñés under coach Unai Mendia, who spotted potential others missed.

Madrid’s scouting department did their homework thoroughly, sending representatives to multiple matches and putting Rezola through four internal assessment filters - a process few prospects successfully navigate.

Once the final contract is signed (the pre-agreement is already in place), Rezola will begin a three-year journey at Madrid with his development overseen directly by Álvaro Arbeloa, who’ll determine when he’s ready to progress through the ranks.

For the lad from San Sebastián, January marks the start of a whole new chapter. As they say in the football world, the rest will be written on the pitch.
