Arribas and Vicente: The Premier Class Duo Powering Almería and Racing to the Summit
How two exceptional talents with top-flight quality are dominating Spain's second division and driving their clubs toward promotion with astonishing goal contributions.
Second Division’s Dynamic Duo Setting La Liga Hypermotion Alight
While it might be the second rung of Spanish football, there’s nothing second-rate about the performances of Sergio Arribas and Iñigo Vicente this season. These two maestros are the beating heart behind Racing Santander and Almería’s table-topping form in La Liga Hypermotion.
Racing currently lead the pack with Almería sitting third, level on points with second-placed Deportivo. But what’s the secret sauce behind their success? Look no further than these two creative sparkplugs lighting up the division.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
The stats these lads are putting up would make even Premier League attackers green with envy:
- Iñigo Vicente (Racing): 4 goals and 10 assists in just 17 matches
- Sergio Arribas (Almería): 9 goals and 5 assists in the same timeframe
That’s 14 goal contributions each - absolutely nobody in the division is producing more. Vicente is actually the top assist provider across all of Europe’s top five leagues and their second divisions. Proper tidy that!
Turning Points
Both players proved their worth in spades during the most recent matchday:
Vicente sparked Racing’s fifth comeback of the season at Cádiz’s Nuevo Mirandilla stadium. With his team 2-0 down after just 15 minutes, the Basque wizard pulled a rabbit out of his hat with an absolute pearler that kickstarted Racing’s revival, eventually securing a 3-2 victory.
Meanwhile, over in Andorra, Arribas was having his own party, bagging a brace to secure three points for Almería despite a late consolation from the hosts.
Not Flying Solo
Every Robin needs a Batman, and these two have stellar supporting casts:
At Almería, Adrian Embarba has been on fire with 9 goals and 3 assists of his own. Together with Arribas, they’re responsible for a staggering 80% of Almería’s offensive output, contributing to 26 of the team’s 33 goals under manager Rubi.
Vicente’s partners in crime at Racing are equally impressive. Asier Villalibre leads the division’s scoring charts with 10 goals and an assist, while Andrés Martín has chipped in with 8 goals and 3 assists. This perfect attacking trident has propelled the Cantabrians to the summit.
Premier Quality in a Second Tier Package
For my money, both these players are performing well above the level you’d expect in Spain’s second tier. Arribas has already notched his best-ever season statistically, while Vicente is on course to surpass his impressive 2023/24 campaign (3 goals, 12 assists).
If they keep this up, they won’t just be leading their clubs to promotion – they might find themselves on the radar of some bigger clubs come summer. But for now, La Liga Hypermotion is being treated to some champagne football courtesy of two players who are, quite frankly, a bit special.
