Sadiq Snubbed by Nigeria for AFCON as Transfer Limbo Continues
Real Sociedad striker Umar Sadiq won't be heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, removing one potential obstacle to a January transfer from San Sebastián.
Sadiq Left at Home as Nigeria Finalizes AFCON Squad
Umar Sadiq’s rollercoaster ride at Real Sociedad has taken another twist as the Nigerian striker has been left out of his country’s final 28-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament, running from December 21st to January 18th, won’t feature the 27-year-old despite his recent increase in playing time for La Real.
The snub comes at a curious time for Sadiq, whose future in San Sebastián remains about as clear as mud. While he’s featured in five of Sociedad’s last seven matches (three as a starter), the club’s brass don’t seem entirely convinced by what they’ve seen from the former Roma man.
January Exit Looking Increasingly Likely
This AFCON omission removes what could have been a significant obstacle to a potential January departure. Had Sadiq been called up, he would’ve been unavailable for nearly a month during the winter transfer window, complicating any potential move.
Sources close to the club have indicated that Sociedad attempted to shift Sadiq during the summer window but couldn’t find suitable takers. With his performances since then failing to set the world alight, the January window may represent another opportunity for both parties to part ways.
Returning Stars Add to the Squeeze
Further pressure comes from the imminent returns of key attacking players:
- Captain Mikel Oyarzabal is nearing recovery from injury
- Young Icelandic striker Orri Óskarsson is also expected back in early 2026
With these options returning to the fold, Sadiq’s already limited opportunities could become even more scarce in the second half of the campaign.
For a player who arrived with such promise, it’s been a proper mare in San Sebastián. The writing appears to be on the wall for Sadiq’s time at La Real, with the only question being whether suitable suitors will emerge next month. The lack of AFCON commitments means interested clubs won’t need to wait until February to get their man.
