Athletic Club Face 'Welcome to the Potato Patch': O Couto Pitch Controversy Heats Up Before Cup Clash
Athletic Bilbao's Copa del Rey journey begins on a controversial pitch in Ourense that's sparked local political rows after €900,000 of questionable renovations.
Ernesto Valverde’s men prepare for a potentially banana-skin Copa del Rey fixture at Ourense with the dodgy state of O Couto’s pitch becoming a proper political hot potato in Galicia.
Pitch Problems
The Athletic Club brass will be having kittens about the state of the playing surface as they prepare to visit Primera Federación side Ourense this Thursday. The Basque giants face a team that’s already knocked out both Oviedo and Girona in this season’s competition, and now must contend with a pitch that local politicians are using as ammunition against each other.
Local socialist councillor Alba Iglesias didn’t mince her words on social media, declaring “Welcome to the potato patch” when discussing O Couto’s playing surface. She’s not wrong either - the pitch is in a right two and eight despite significant investment.
Money Down the Drain?
The controversy centers around the €900,000 spent on renovations over the past two years that appear to have made little difference to the playing conditions. The local government is taking stick from opposition politicians who claim the money has been wasted on a surface still plagued by:
- Bare patches
- Potholes and uneven areas
- Poor drainage
- Elevated sections
Iglesias pointed out that over €500,000 has been spent on maintenance alone, branding the renovation “disastrous” and mocking previous claims that it would be “a pitch worthy of professional football.”
What Went Wrong?
The pitch problems stem from two main factors:
- Overuse: Too many matches being played on the surface
- Climate damage: Last summer was the hottest on record in the region, causing fungal problems
The Xunta (Galician government) ordered emergency remedial work less than a week ago, including new turf sections, aeration and seeding of damaged areas. However, the weekend match against Barakaldo showed little improvement.
To make matters worse, rain is forecast for Thursday’s cup tie, which could further deteriorate playing conditions and potentially turn this into a classic cup upset scenario where the playing field becomes the great equalizer.
Athletic will need to adapt quickly to avoid becoming the next victim of both Ourense’s cup heroics and their notorious playing surface.
