Córdoba's Drought: Blanking Like It's 2011

Córdoba CF struggling through a goal drought not seen in 14 years, with consecutive 0-0 draws highlighting their offensive woes in Segunda División.

The Blanquiverdes are experiencing a serious case of goal-shyness that has fans reaching for the history books.

Six and counting

Iván Ania’s men have now gone six matches without tasting victory, but it’s the consecutive goalless draws against Leganés (away) and Eibar (at home) that have raised eyebrows around El Arcángel. For a side built on attacking principles, this scoring drought feels particularly concerning.

You’d need to wind the clock back a full 14 years to find a comparable barren spell. The 2011-12 campaign was the last time Córdoba registered back-to-back 0-0 draws in league competition, occurring on matchdays 17 and 18 against Nástic (away) and Recreativo (home).

Interestingly, that drought came under the stewardship of Paco Jémez, another manager known for his ambitious, attack-minded philosophy – not unlike current boss Ania. The parallels are striking, though Jémez’s team did manage to sandwich a Copa del Rey victory against top-flight Betis between those scoreless league affairs.

Recent history

If you’re willing to count across competitions, there is a more recent example. Under Luis Carrión (who, in a bit of football’s typical timing, has just been sacked by Real Oviedo), Córdoba recorded consecutive 0-0 results in January 2017:

  • First at Santo Domingo against Alcorcón in the Copa del Rey
  • Then at home to Rayo Vallecano in the league

But for pure league-to-league goalless draws, we’re looking at nearly nine years without such a scoring blackout.

Creativity crisis

What’s particularly troubling for the Córdoba faithful is how a team built on attacking principles has suddenly lost its creative spark. Despite facing two defensively stubborn opponents in Leganés and Eibar, the complete lack of cutting edge suggests deeper issues than just tough opposition.

With the Christmas period approaching, Ania needs to find solutions quickly. The team appears completely bereft of ideas in the final third – a far cry from the entertaining outfit fans have grown accustomed to watching.

The pressure’s mounting on Córdoba to rediscover their scoring touch before this blip turns into a full-blown crisis. After all, no one wants their team described as “dry as a bone” heading into the festive period.
