Llorente Limps Off Again: Betis' Defensive Crisis Deepens at Vallecas

Diego Llorente's injury nightmare continues as the Betis defender exits after just six minutes against Rayo Vallecano, adding to Pellegrini's mounting selection headache.

Manuel Pellegrini’s defensive options continue to dwindle as Diego Llorente was forced off with what appears to be a recurring thigh injury just six minutes into Betis’ clash with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday night.

Another Setback for Llorente

The Madrid-born defender, making only his second La Liga start of the season, immediately signaled to the bench after his first sprint of the match. Medical staff applied ice to his left thigh, which was already sporting strapping when he took to the pitch at Vallecas.

This latest setback will be particularly gutting for both player and manager, as Llorente has struggled for consistent fitness since joining the Seville outfit. His previous La Liga start back in September against Real Sociedad ended similarly, with the defender unable to continue after half-time.

Worrying Echoes of Previous Injury

The location of the injury raises serious concerns, as it appears to be the same area that caused Llorente significant problems earlier this year. In April, he suffered a severe muscular injury that required surgery and sidelined him for over four months, forcing him to miss a proper pre-season with his teammates.

Pellegrini’s Selection Headache

The timing couldn’t be worse for Pellegrini, who’s already dealing with a proper mare in terms of squad availability. The Chilean gaffer now faces two remaining fixtures before the winter break with increasingly limited defensive options:

  • Copa del Rey clash against Real Murcia
  • La Liga encounter with Getafe

While the severity of Llorente’s injury remains unknown, it seems highly unlikely he’ll feature in either match, given his injury history and the cautious approach needed with muscular problems.

European Rotation Disrupted

Llorente had been establishing himself as a regular starter in Betis’ Europa League campaign, featuring in the starting XI for three European fixtures this season. He’d also started both of their Copa del Rey matches thus far.

This setback will force Pellegrini to shuffle his pack once again as Betis battle on multiple fronts heading into the new year.
