Betis Bigwig Catalán: 'We'll do everything possible to improve the squad'
Real Betis vice-president addresses shareholders about January transfer plans, confirming club is operating at financial limits but still looking to strengthen.
Real Betis vice-president José Miguel López Catalán has given the green light for January reinforcements, while reminding shareholders the club is already operating at its financial ceiling.
Record spending already in place
Speaking at the club’s Ordinary and Extraordinary Shareholders’ Meeting, Catalán was keen to emphasize that Betis are already pushing the boat out when it comes to squad investment:
- Current squad costs approximately €130 million (including salaries, amortizations, and bonuses)
- This represents the highest squad expenditure in the club’s history
- Ordinary income hovering around €155 million
- The proportion of income spent on playing staff is described as “high and ambitious”
Several shareholders had apparently questioned whether Los Verdiblancos would be splashing the cash this January, with particular concern about strengthening the striker position.
Transfer team “working like beasts”
Despite the financial constraints, Catalán offered hope to the Betis faithful that reinforcements might still arrive when the transfer window opens on January 1st.
The vice-president confirmed that Sporting Director Manu Fajardo and his team are actively exploring options, with Catalán noting that the January window has been fruitful for Betis in previous seasons.
Balancing ambition with responsibility
Catalán’s comments reflect the delicate balancing act facing many La Liga clubs outside the traditional powerhouses. The Betis board is clearly trying to manage expectations while not closing the door on potential signings.
For Betis supporters, the message seems clear - don’t expect any Brahms and Liszt signings that break the bank, but the club will be on the hunt for sensible additions that can strengthen Manuel Pellegrini’s squad for the second half of the season.
With Betis currently fighting on multiple fronts, including European competition, any January additions could prove crucial to their season’s ambitions.
