Betis Boss Rules Out Cartuja Stadium Share with Sevilla: 'Don't See Room for Both'

Real Betis president Ángel Haro pours cold water on Sevilla's stadium plans, claiming La Cartuja can't accommodate both Seville clubs simultaneously during renovations.

Haro Dismisses Groundshare Possibility with City Rivals

Betis president Ángel Haro has thrown a spanner in the works of Sevilla’s stadium renovation plans, suggesting that sharing the Olympic Stadium La Cartuja would be a proper nightmare for both Seville clubs.

The comments come after Sevilla president José María Del Nido Carrasco expressed his desire to begin renovations on the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán in 2027 - creating a potential clash with Betis’ own temporary relocation plans.

Timing Clash Creates Derby Drama

Betis already have a contract to use La Cartuja until 2028 while they complete renovations on their Benito Villamarín home. Haro made it crystal clear that his club won’t be budging on their arrangement:

“I’m not sure what Sevilla’s expectations are regarding timing and works,” Haro stated. “What I do know is that we have a contract with La Cartuja that gives us peace of mind. I see it as complex for both teams to be there.”

What’s particularly telling is that neither Sevilla nor Olympic Stadium officials have bothered to contact Betis about the potential groundshare - suggesting this might be more wishful thinking than concrete planning from their rivals across town.

Betis Renovation Timeline

Haro also provided shareholders with an update on Betis’ own stadium renovation project:

  • Current completion deadline: May 2028
  • Ambitious goal to finish one month earlier (though “complicated”)
  • Shareholders expressed concerns but left “satisfied” with explanations

January Transfer Window Plans

On potential January transfers, Haro was predictably cautious, noting the club has already spent to their limit this season:

“We see every transfer window as an opportunity, but we must be aware of our limitations. This year we have a record squad budget and that must be valued. If an opportunity arises and circumstances allow, we’ll consider it.”

He also hinted at possible player sales, acknowledging: “If there’s an opportunity for a sale that generates profit, we have to consider it. It’s clear we need to balance the books before the end of the year.”

The Betis assembly concluded successfully with shareholders approving all agenda items by a wide majority, though the stadium situation will clearly be one to keep an eye on as we approach 2027.
