Betis Draw a Blank as Vallecas Floodlights Dim Their Scoring Streak
Pellegrini's men maintain their unbeaten away record in La Liga despite firing blanks against Rayo Vallecas, ending their perfect scoring run on the road.
The Verdiblancos maintained their unbeaten away record in La Liga but saw their consecutive scoring streak on the road come to a crashing halt against Rayo Vallecas.
Mixed emotions at Vallecas
Bit of a strange one for the Betis faithful last night. The Seville side left Vallecas with a point and their eighth clean sheet of the season across all competitions - not too shabby at all. But the attacking spark that’s defined their away form this season was nowhere to be found.
For the first time in 16 matchdays, Pellegrini’s men failed to find the net on their travels in La Liga. Prior to this goalless affair, they’d only drawn blanks twice all season - once at home against Atlético Madrid in the league and away to Genk in their European adventure.
Missing firepower
The timing of this offensive drought isn’t exactly a coincidence, is it? Betis were missing some serious attacking options:
- Abde and Bakambu away on Africa Cup of Nations duty
- Isco sidelined with injury (not expected back until early 2026)
Despite these absences, it wasn’t for lack of trying. Betis managed 13 shots with six on target - more attempts than they’ve registered in seven previous league matches this campaign. The opportunities were there:
- Marc Roca saw his effort brilliantly saved by Batalla
- Riquelme blasted one over the bar when well-positioned
- Academy product Pablo García nearly scored from an impossibly tight angle late on
Still among La Liga’s elite
Even with this minor blip, Betis remain the fifth-highest scoring team in La Liga with 25 goals, trailing only the usual suspects: Barcelona (49), Real Madrid (34), Villarreal (31) and Atlético Madrid (30).
More impressively, they’re still the only team in the division who haven’t tasted defeat away from home this season. Proper Adam and Eve, that.
The compact pitch dimensions at Vallecas and a congested fixture list certainly didn’t help matters. Pellegrini’s men will look to get back on the scoresheet this Thursday in Copa del Rey action against Real Murcia, before facing a tough final challenge of the year against Bordalás’ Getafe at La Cartuja.
