Homecoming King: Vivian's Emotional Return to Ourense in Copa del Rey
Athletic Club's Dani Vivian returns to his childhood summer playground as Athletic face Ourense in the Copa del Rey, with family connections making this more than just a match.
Homecoming King: Vivian’s Emotional Return to Ourense in Copa del Rey
Athletic Club’s Copa del Rey opener against Ourense has all the makings of a proper family affair for defender Dani Vivian, who’ll be stepping onto familiar territory at O Couto Stadium.
Family Ties Run Deep
Vivian isn’t your typical Basque visitor to Galicia. The international centre-back has deep roots in Ourense province, with his father’s family hailing from the village of Berrande. For young Dani, this corner of northwestern Spain wasn’t just a dot on the map – it was where he spent his summers right through his teenage years.
Interestingly, it’s not just Vivian with connections to the area. His teammate Aymeric Laporte (who’ll miss the match through injury) also has in-laws residing in Vilardevós, the council seat of Berrande. Small world, innit?
Local Hero Status
The Athletic defender has achieved something rare – he’s so beloved in the region that there’s literally a supporters’ club named after him. The “Peña Athletic Club Verín Vivian” boasts around 60 members, and they’ll be among approximately 100 fans with personal connections to Vivian cheering from the stands.
This homecoming carries extra emotional weight for the defender. His grandfather Francisco, who memorably participated in the video announcing Vivian’s call-up to Spain’s Euro 2024 squad, passed away just hours before Spain’s semi-final against France. While his grandfather won’t be there physically, Vivian’s aunt and cousins will be among his most enthusiastic supporters at O Couto.
Summer Magic
Those childhood summers in Berrande weren’t just about family time. They became part of Vivian’s football journey in the most unexpected way. During one summer visit, while he was playing for Santutxu under coach Ibai Gómez after leaving Vitoria, Vivian received the call that would change everything – Athletic Club wanted him at their famed Lezama academy.
The moment couldn’t have been more cinematic – the news reached him while he was enjoying the waters at Playa de la Lanzada in the Rías Baixas. Talk about “making a splash” in your career!
For Vivian, this Copa del Rey fixture isn’t just another game on the calendar. It’s a journey back to where many of his fondest childhood memories were formed, now returning as an established international footballer. From beach days to representing Los Leones – it’s proper Roy of the Rovers stuff.
