Stadium Showdown: Las Palmas and Gran Canaria Authorities in Bitter War of Words

UD Las Palmas president threatens to abandon Gran Canaria Stadium as local authorities hit back at 'blackmail' claims in escalating venue dispute.

Stadium Showdown: Las Palmas and Gran Canaria Authorities in Bitter War of Words

The relationship between UD Las Palmas and the Gran Canaria Island Council has hit rock bottom over the future management of the Gran Canaria Stadium, with both sides trading barbs in an increasingly hostile public spat.

Christmas Dinner Turns Sour

What should have been a festive occasion turned into a proper barney when Las Palmas president Miguel Ángel Ramírez dropped a bombshell during the club’s traditional Christmas dinner. The gaffer didn’t mince his words about the upcoming tender process for the stadium’s management:

“If Las Palmas isn’t chosen to run this stadium, I guarantee we’ll never play there again.”

Talk about putting a dampener on the Christmas pudding! That ultimatum has gone down like a lead balloon with the local authorities, who own the stadium and will decide its future management.

Council Claps Back

Antonio Morales, President of the Gran Canaria Island Council (Cabildo), wasn’t having any of it. He’s come out swinging with a proper telling-off for Las Palmas:

  • The Council is “sovereign in making its decisions”
  • No one will “set the pace” for decisions on stadium construction and management
  • Most pointedly: “We will not accept pressure or blackmail”

This last statement really shows how the relationship between these two institutions, which have historically been on good terms, has deteriorated to new lows.

What’s At Stake

The Gran Canaria Stadium has been Las Palmas’ home since 2003, but the club clearly wants more control over its operation. The upcoming tender process will determine who manages the venue going forward, and Las Palmas intends to submit a professional bid.

However, the club’s threat to abandon their home ground if unsuccessful has created a proper storm in the Canary Islands. It’s a high-stakes game of chicken that could have serious consequences for both the club and local football supporters.

Looking Ahead

With Las Palmas currently battling in Spain’s Segunda División, this off-pitch drama is the last thing the club needs. Whether this is a genuine threat or just negotiating tactics remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure – this dispute is far from over.

The ball is now in the Council’s court as they prepare the tender process, but Las Palmas’ ultimatum has certainly made this more than your average bit of admin. It’s turned into a proper ding-dong that could reshape football on the island for years to come.
