Almeyda's Bernabéu Return: The Man Who Snubbed Real Madrid
Sevilla boss Matías Almeyda returns to the Bernabéu, the stadium that could have been his home had he not chosen loyalty over the Spanish giants in 1996.
The Road Not Taken
Football’s full of sliding doors moments, innit? Tomorrow, Matías Almeyda will pace the Bernabéu touchline as Sevilla manager, but back in ‘96, the Argentine could’ve been donning the famous white shirt instead.
The story’s a proper throwback to when Almeyda was a promising midfielder at River Plate, looking to make the big move to European football. Sevilla and Real Madrid went head-to-head for his signature, with the Andalusian club splashing out a whopping 9.36 million dollars (about a billion pesetas) to secure his services.
Loyalty Over Glory
So why did Almeyda turn down the chance to join Los Blancos? The man himself explained it yesterday in his presser:
“Sevilla was the first club to call me,” Almeyda revealed, explaining how his performance against Spain in the Olympics had caught European attention when scouting was still done via VHS tapes rather than sophisticated data analysis.
Despite Real Madrid coming in with a comparable offer, Almeyda had already given his word to Sevilla. In an era when a handshake meant something, the Argentine stuck to his guns and honored his commitment.
From Record Signing to Relegation
The transfer made Almeyda:
- Sevilla’s most expensive signing at that time
- A record transfer fee for Argentine football
But football can be a right old barney sometimes. Despite the hefty investment, Sevilla suffered relegation that very season. In a twist of fate that you couldn’t make up, Almeyda’s final match in a Sevilla shirt? A 4-2 defeat at the Bernabéu.
“I was quite the visionary,” Almeyda later joked about the move that didn’t exactly pan out as planned.
Full Circle
Now, decades later, Almeyda returns to the stadium that could’ve been his home, this time in the dugout rather than on the pitch. It’s a proper full circle moment for the Argentine, who’s managed to carve out a respectable managerial career despite that early career setback.
As he prepares to face the club he once rejected, Almeyda might allow himself a moment to wonder what might have been. But in football, as in life, sometimes the road less traveled makes all the difference.
