Ansotegi Eyes Christmas Cheer as La Real Face Crucial Levante Test

Interim boss Jon Ansotegi hopes to sign off with a win against struggling Levante that would lift Real Sociedad further away from the relegation zone.

Ansotegi Eyes Christmas Cheer as La Real Face Crucial Levante Test

Real Sociedad’s caretaker manager Jon Ansotegi is hoping to deliver an early Christmas present as his brief stint in charge concludes with a vital relegation six-pointer against Levante.

Team News Boost

The temporary gaffer had some positive updates in his pre-match presser, with captain Mikel Oyarzabal set to feature after getting three more days of recovery under his belt. It’s a proper Adam and Eve for La Real, who’ve been missing their talisman’s influence.

Other squad notes:

  • Sadiq and Goti available
  • Óskarsson back in training after three months out but lacking match fitness
  • Barrenetxea remains sidelined
  • Youth players Mariezkurrena and Astiazaran continue with the first team

Tactical Flexibility

Ansotegi is keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the starting XI, though Tuesday’s Copa lineup featured many regular starters. The interim boss mentioned the possibility of either a back three or a four-man defence with Álvaro Odriozola, who didn’t feature in the midweek cup win at Elda.

“I haven’t decided the eleven yet, we’ll wait for today’s training session and then think about the most optimal players for this match,” Ansotegi explained.

Sucic Redemption Arc

One of the more interesting subplots has been the return of Luka Sucic, who found himself frozen out after a reported disagreement with previous manager Sergio. Ansotegi has offered the Croatian a clean slate.

“I spoke with him, asked if he was alright, how he felt… He’s a great player who’s already proven himself at La Real, and I fully trust he’ll recover his best level,” said the caretaker.

Sucic repaid that faith by scoring in the Copa victory, potentially earning himself a starting berth against Levante.

Relegation Battle

Both sides are desperate for points, with Levante particularly struggling after five consecutive La Liga defeats. Despite their poor form, Ansotegi isn’t taking them lightly:

“We’re aware they have very good players and are coming off an incredible year. They’re a very strong opponent.”

For La Real, victory could provide breathing space above the drop zone before a new permanent manager arrives. As Ansotegi put it with characteristic simplicity: “If we get a victory, I’ll go into Christmas happy.”

The match at Ciutat de Valencia represents a massive opportunity for both clubs to end 2025 on a positive note.
