The Madrid suburb club continues its yuletide tradition with a musical Christmas cracker that puts a Spanish spin on England’s iconic football anthem.

Football Meets Festive Cheer

Getafe have unveiled their annual Christmas carol, and this year they’ve only gone and put their own twist on ‘It’s Coming Home’ - the anthem that has both blessed and cursed English football since 1996. The club’s holiday video features an eclectic mix of professional musicians and footballers trying their hand at something other than finding the back of the net.

The blue-clad outfit from Madrid’s southern suburbs have assembled quite the ensemble:

  • The vocalists: María Luna, Ariann, Tania Palacios and Igor Alejandro lead the singing
  • The players-turned-musicians: Nyom on bass, goalkeeper David Soria on violin, while Adrián Liso and Coba da Costa make appearances
  • The backing: The Allegro Orchestra provides choral support

Behind the Scenes

Speaking about the experience, María Luna revealed that the opportunity to record with Getafe came as something unexpected but delightful. Despite describing herself as “a bit of a Grinch” historically, she found the experience took her back to her childhood.

The singer admitted approaching the project with some trepidation, feeling the weight of responsibility. However, she quickly found herself at ease, noting that “they made everything so easy for me” and observing that the club clearly functions like “a big family” behind the scenes.

A Growing Tradition

This festive musical offering has become something of a tradition for Getafe, who continue to find creative ways to connect with their supporters during the holiday season. While some clubs stick to conventional Christmas messages, Getafe’s musical approach shows they’re not afraid to have a bit of a laugh while spreading seasonal cheer.

For English fans, seeing ‘It’s Coming Home’ reimagined by a Spanish club might feel a bit like someone nicking your pint - but you’ve got to appreciate the club’s willingness to embrace the Christmas spirit in style.
