Isco Turns to Growth Factor Treatment in Race Against Time

Real Betis midfielder Isco Alarcón seeking innovative recovery methods after suffering more than just a surface wound in collision with Amrabat

Isco Turns to Growth Factor Treatment in Race Against Time

Betis’ creative maestro Isco Alarcón is set for platelet-rich plasma therapy as his recovery from what appeared to be a simple knock has turned into a more complex medical situation.

More Than Just a Scratch

Three weeks on from that nasty collision with Amrabat during Betis’ Europa League clash with Utrecht, and Isco’s still nowhere near getting his boots back on. Initially, we all thought it was just about the seven stitches he needed, but Betis have now come clean about the full extent of the problem.

The club’s doctor, José Manuel Álvarez, has painted a proper picture of what’s going on, and it’s a bit more Adam and Eve than first appeared:

  • The high-intensity impact not only split the skin but caused serious trauma to the joint
  • The collision forced Isco’s ankle into a sudden, violent flexion-extension movement
  • Significant swelling developed throughout the leg and ankle
  • There’s now damage to the cartilage inside the joint itself

The Pain Game

While the wound has healed and the stitches are out (which took about a fortnight), it’s the joint pain that’s keeping the Spanish midfielder on the sidelines.

Dr. Álvarez explained that even after draining the edema and working on ankle mobility, Isco still experiences significant pain when attempting to run or jump – basically anything involving impact on the joint.

Growth Factor Treatment

After consultation with their trauma team and specialists, Betis and Isco have agreed to begin a course of growth factor injections – specifically platelet-rich plasma therapy – to accelerate the healing process.

The recovery timeline remains frustratingly uncertain, with Dr. Álvarez admitting it’s “slower than we could expect” and that they’ll reassess in approximately two weeks before making further decisions.

For Pellegrini’s Betis, losing their midfield magician for an extended period is a proper kick in the Khyber, especially with the business end of the season approaching. The creative burden will now fall heavily on the shoulders of others as they navigate both domestic and European campaigns without their talisman.
