Getafe president Ángel Torres dishes on transfer plans, Bordalás's future, and why he 'slept better than ever' after their Copa del Rey exit.
Torres Tells It Straight: ‘If We Had 25 Players, They’d Ask for 26’
Getafe president Ángel Torres has offered his trademark blunt assessment of the club’s situation, addressing everything from their Copa del Rey exit to January transfer plans and the future of manager José Bordalás.
Copa del Rey: No Love Lost
Speaking at the club’s traditional Christmas gathering, Torres was refreshingly honest about their cup elimination against Burgos:
“Life goes on. I’ve slept better than ever because I know in a month we’ll be glad about the Copa, which is either play the final or it’s a disaster,” he said.
Rather than throwing a wobbly about the defeat, Torres acknowledged Burgos were simply better on the day. Proper football man’s response, that.
Transfer Talk: Keeping It Real
When asked about January reinforcements, Torres wasn’t having any of the usual transfer window nonsense:
- Currently have 21 first-team players plus academy graduates
- Emphasized Getafe’s identity as a club that develops youth
- Suggested bringing in too many senior pros blocks pathway for youngsters
The president did hint at potentially adding an attacking player to help their current forwards find the net more frequently, but tempered expectations with a bit of classic Torres straight-talking about managers always wanting more players.
Uche Update
Torres provided clarity on Uche’s situation at Crystal Palace, confirming the forward has a mandatory purchase option if he starts 10 matches. He noted that after a slow start, Uche seems to be finding his feet in the Premier League, even bagging a proper Bobby Dazzler recently.
Bordalás Going Nowhere
In perhaps the most amusing moment, Torres laughed off rumors linking manager José Bordalás with the Crystal Palace job:
“Many absurdities have been said about Crystal Palace, even that Pepe might go there as manager. Pepe is very happy here and doesn’t speak English!”
Torres confirmed the club does have salary cap flexibility to make January moves if the right opportunities emerge, with the sporting directors already on the case. For Getafe fans, that’s better than a Christmas pressie.
