Álvaro García: 'The problem is in our heads, not our legs'

Rayo Vallecano winger gets brutally honest after Elche hammering, refusing to blame fixture congestion for their poor form as 2025 draws to a close.

Rayo Star Admits Mental Weakness Behind Recent Struggles

As Rayo Vallecano limp towards the Christmas break after taking a proper hiding at Elche, Álvaro García has come out with some refreshingly honest comments about what’s gone wrong for Los Franjirrojos.

While many players might reach for the old ‘tired legs’ excuse after a heavy defeat during the busy festive period, García wasn’t having any of it. The lightning-quick winger has pointed the finger squarely at the team’s mental approach rather than physical fatigue.

Mental Not Physical

García was crystal clear that Rayo’s recent struggles have nothing to do with their packed fixture list. In fact, he was adamant that their bodies are holding up just fine – it’s what’s going on between their ears that’s the problem.

“It’s mental. The physical side has nothing to do with it,” García explained, showing the kind of self-awareness that’s often missing from post-match interviews.

Apologetic to Travelling Support

The defeat clearly stung even more knowing that loyal supporters had made the trek from Vallecas to witness such a disappointing display. García acknowledged the pain of letting down the fans who’d traveled to support them.

The result puts a dampener on what has otherwise been a decent 2025 for Rayo, with García describing the year as “super beautiful” despite this poor run of form to finish it.

Looking Forward

Rayo now head into the winter break with plenty to ponder. García suggested each player needs to sort things out in their own head and return with the fighting spirit that has characterised the team at their best.

Their first challenge of 2026 will be a Madrid derby against Getafe on January 2nd – a proper bread and butter fixture that should test whether they’ve managed to reset mentally after this disappointing end to the year.

For all the doom and gloom right now, it’s worth remembering that Rayo have had some proper moments this year. But as my old man would say, they need to get their Barnet Fair in order if they want to kick on in the new year.
