Betis Brilliantly Back Ruibal After Homophobic Abuse in Vallecas

Real Betis respond to homophobic comments directed at Aitor Ruibal with a powerful matchday poster featuring the player with painted nails.

Betis Stand Up Against Bigotry with Class

Real Betis have shown they’re proper class acts with their latest matchday poster, sending a crystal clear message against homophobia after their player Aitor Ruibal faced abuse at Vallecas.

What Happened?

Last Monday, following Betis’ away match against Rayo Vallecano, Ruibal was giving a post-match interview to Movistar LaLiga TV when some absolute muppet from the stands shouted homophobic comments at him, specifically telling him to “paint his nails” - clearly meant as an insult.

Ruibal, not one to let it slide, interrupted his interview to respond directly, calling out the fan as a “homophobe”. The player later mentioned this sort of abuse happens “in all matches” but didn’t want to make a big deal of it.

Betis’ Brilliant Response

Rather than just releasing a bog-standard statement condemning the incident (which would’ve been the bare minimum), Betis went one better. For their final LaLiga matchday poster of the year ahead of their game against Getafe, the club featured Ruibal prominently with:

  • Nails painted in the club’s green, white and black colors
  • The club’s traditional matchday slogan ‘Día de Betis’ (Betis Day)

It’s a subtle yet powerful Adam and Eve (believe) you me - showing support for their player while sending a clear message against discrimination in football.

Ongoing Issue in Spanish Football

This isn’t just a one-off, sadly. Players like Ruibal and former Betis striker Borja Iglesias have faced similar comments in the past for painting their nails or carrying bags that some narrow-minded fans consider “not masculine enough”.

What’s particularly impressive about Betis’ response is how they’ve turned something negative into a positive statement of club values. Rather than getting into a barney with bigots, they’ve elevated their player and made it clear where they stand.

In a sport where clubs often tiptoe around controversial issues, Betis have shown some proper bottle here. More of this, please!
