Matarazzo Gets the Grand Tour: New Txuriurdin Boss Checks Out His Digs
Real Sociedad's new manager Pellegrino Matarazzo has visited Zubieta training complex and Anoeta stadium as he prepares to take charge of the Basque club.
Matarazzo’s San Sebastián Induction Begins
Pellegrino Matarazzo has been given the full welcome package at Real Sociedad, as the Italian-American gaffer gets his feet under the table at his new club. The incoming boss was shown around the impressive Zubieta training complex and Anoeta stadium, getting a proper feel for his new surroundings before officially taking the reins.
The former Hoffenheim manager was in good spirits as he toured the facilities alongside two proper VIPs - club president Jokin Aperribay and sporting director Erik Bretos. Talk about having the red carpet rolled out!
Zubieta Impressions
Matarazzo would have been well chuffed with what he saw at Zubieta. The state-of-the-art training complex is absolutely top drawer, with all the modern bells and whistles a coach could ask for. The facility gives him and his players everything they need to succeed, which will be music to his ears as he plots how to get La Real back on track.
After the tour, the trio headed off for a proper slap-up meal at one of San Sebastián’s finest restaurants. When in Rome, as they say - or rather, when in the culinary capital of Spain!
Anoeta Visit Coincides with B Team Defeat
The day wasn’t all sunshine and roses though. Matarazzo’s visit to Anoeta coincided with Real Sociedad B (Sanse) suffering a 3-1 defeat to Ceuta. Not exactly the housewarming present he would have hoped for!
Still, the new gaffer was likely imagining a very different scene - the stadium packed with 30,000 passionate Txuriurdin supporters rather than the sparse 1,500 that turned up for the B team match. You can bet your bottom dollar he was picturing himself on that touchline, orchestrating victories and celebrating with the fans.
Looking Ahead
Matarazzo has signed on to lead Real Sociedad for the remainder of this season plus the next campaign. After this initial getting-to-know-you phase, the serious business begins as he looks to make his mark on a talented squad that has underperformed this season.
The Italian-American brings Bundesliga experience and a reputation for developing young talent - something that should sit well with La Real’s philosophy. How quickly he can implement his ideas and turn things around will be fascinating to watch.
