Montilivi Misery Continues as Girona Slump to Atlético Defeat

Míchel's men end their five-match unbeaten home run with a disappointing display, ensuring they'll spend Christmas in the relegation zone.

Montilivi Misery Continues as Girona Slump to Atlético Defeat

Girona’s brief respite at home has come crashing to a halt as Simeone’s Atlético Madrid clinched a comfortable victory without breaking much of a sweat.

Home Comforts Evaporate

After five unbeaten matches at their Montilivi fortress, Girona’s bubble has well and truly burst. The Catalans had been showing signs of life with victories against Valencia and Alavés, plus creditable draws against Espanyol, Oviedo, and most impressively, Real Madrid.

But Sunday’s performance was proper dog’s dinner stuff. Atlético barely needed to get out of second gear, with Koke’s long-range stunner and a fortunate Gallagher effort that deflected off Vitor Reis proving more than enough.

Girona’s attacking threat was limited to a Witsel effort that drew an incredible save from Oblak, and another Álex Moreno attempt in the second half that met the same fate. Without their midfield orchestrator Ounahi, Míchel’s men looked bereft of ideas, playing horizontal passes that got them absolutely nowhere against Atlético’s trademark defensive solidity.

Christmas in the Danger Zone

The stats make for grim reading:

  • Girona have only been outside the bottom three on matchday one this season
  • They’ll spend the entire Christmas period in the relegation zone
  • They sit just one point behind Valencia, who occupy the first position of safety

The home faithful made their feelings crystal clear at the final whistle, giving some players a proper earful for their perceived lack of ambition. The atmosphere turned decidedly frosty as players trudged off after another disappointing showing.

Tactical Tweaks Can’t Save the Day

With Ounahi unavailable, Míchel attempted to reshuffle his pack by moving Iván Martín to an advanced role and deploying utility man Arnau Martínez alongside Witsel in midfield. The Catalan youngster has already featured at right-back and centre-back this season, showcasing his versatility.

Alejandro Francés slotted in at right-back, with Hugo Rincón reportedly nursing a knock. While Arnau grew into his unfamiliar midfield role before being subbed off on 61 minutes, it wasn’t enough to spark any real creativity from the home side.

2025 is shaping up to be a year to forget for Girona fans, with the team’s poor form extending from last season’s dismal second half straight into the current campaign. Something’s gotta give in the new year, or they’ll be in serious bother.
