Another week, another unconvincing performance from Real Madrid. Xabi Alonso might be tucking into his Christmas dinner with a bit more ease after this result, but let’s not kid ourselves – he’s still walking a tightrope at the Bernabéu.
Madrid were absolutely pants against Sevilla, putting in a showing that was more dog’s dinner than champagne football. The visitors outplayed the champions in virtually every department – organization, attitude, and attacking intent. If not for the individual brilliance of Rodrygo and some typical Courtois heroics between the sticks, we’d be talking about a very different outcome.
Trouble in Paradise?
There’s something not quite right in the Madrid camp. Whether it’s:
- Players not buying into Xabi’s methods
- Tension in the dressing room
- The shadow of Florentino Pérez looming large
Something’s off, and it’s showing on the pitch. The body language from some of the senior players was telling – this wasn’t a unified team performance by any stretch.
Individual Brilliance Papers Over the Cracks
Madrid have long been a club that can rely on moments of individual quality to bail them out of trouble, and today was the perfect example. When the collective fails, having world-class talent can be your get out of jail free card.
But how long can this continue? The lack of cohesive play and tactical identity is becoming a recurring theme under Alonso’s stewardship. The honeymoon period is well and truly over, and the brass at Madrid aren’t known for their patience.
The Road Ahead
Xabi might have bought himself some time with these three points, but he’s still very much in the danger zone. The Madrid hierarchy will be watching closely, and performances like this won’t be tolerated for much longer, regardless of results.
As we head into the festive period, Alonso needs to find solutions – and fast. Otherwise, he might find himself on the old dog and bone to his agent sooner rather than later.
