Málaga's 'Kung Fu Panda' Philosophy Has Transformed Their Season

How Juanfran Funes is using animated wisdom to inspire Málaga's remarkable turnaround in Spain's Segunda División, collecting 11 points from 15 since taking charge.

From Relegation Fears to Kung Fu Fighting: Málaga’s Remarkable Turnaround

Juanfran Funes has gone from zero to hero at Málaga, transforming a struggling side into proper contenders while channelling his inner Master Oogway along the way.

The Panda Philosophy

When Funes told reporters, “The past no longer exists, the future is a mystery, and today is a gift; that’s why it’s called the present,” Spanish football media went absolutely radio rental. The quote, immediately recognised as wisdom from DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda, sparked both amusement and curiosity.

Rather than being caught out, Funes has revealed there’s actually method to his apparent madness. The coach confirmed that watching Kung Fu Panda with his squad was a deliberate team-building exercise, not just a random bit of animation appreciation.

“My background as a teacher has always given me many resources,” Funes explained in an interview with Canal Sur’s Gol a Gol programme. “We watched Kung Fu Panda together in the dressing room before I used that phrase in the press conference. It wasn’t coincidence.”

Results Speak Volumes

While some might scoff at the unorthodox approach, you can’t argue with the numbers:

  • 11 points from a possible 15 since Funes took charge
  • A morale-boosting victory against Andalusian rivals Almería to close out 2025
  • La Rosaleda fortress re-established with impressive home performances

From Doubters to Believers

It’s a proper Bobby Moore to candy store transformation for the supporters’ opinion of Funes. When he was promoted from the club’s B team (which was rock bottom of Segunda RFEF), many fans had their knickers in a twist. The appointment seemed like madness given his struggles with the reserves.

Funes understood the skepticism: “The first thing I said to Loren [presumably a club director] was whether he was aware of what he was doing and the criticism he would receive. He replied that he had no doubts and wanted me for the job.”

That faith has been rewarded as Málaga have climbed away from danger with their newfound panda-inspired philosophy. Sometimes the wisest teachers come in the most unexpected packages – whether that’s an animated tortoise or a previously struggling B-team coach.
