Málaga's winter transfer window plans: One in, one out as Diarra nears exit

Málaga CF are plotting their January transfer strategy with Moussa Diarra likely to leave on loan, while the club eyes potential reinforcements in attack and midfield.

Málaga CF are eyeing a conservative approach to the January transfer window, with sporting director Loren Juarros working on a simple one-in, one-out strategy as they look to fine-tune their squad.

Squad Constraints

The Costa del Sol outfit currently have all 25 squad places filled, meaning any new arrivals will require departures first. It’s the classic January conundrum - no room at the inn without someone getting their marching orders first.

Diarra Heading for the Exit

The most likely departure appears to be central defender Moussa Diarra, who’s attracting interest from several clubs in Primera and Segunda RFEF. These clubs have already made contact with Málaga about a potential loan move when the transfer window opens on January 2nd.

Diarra, who wears the number 15 shirt, has struggled for playing time after suffering a serious knee injury. The club previously loaned him to Marbella, but that spell was cut short when he ruptured ligaments in his right knee. Despite these setbacks, Málaga believe another loan could benefit his development, with his contract running until June 2028.

Reinforcement Plans

Once they free up a squad spot, Málaga plan to bring in reinforcements. While several positions are under consideration, a winger appears to be the priority. However, they’re also looking at options for central defence and midfield - areas that were already on their radar during the summer window.

The slow recovery of Luismi Sánchez, who might not play again this season, plus ongoing fitness concerns surrounding Ramón, have kept these alternatives on the table.

Cautious Approach from Management

The club’s general director, Kike Pérez, has publicly tempered expectations, emphasizing that any moves must make sense both sportingly and financially.

“The fundamental thing is recovering the players we already have,” Pérez told Radio MARCA Málaga, adding that “winter miracles don’t exist.”

Manager Juanfran Funes has also downplayed transfer talk, focusing instead on maximizing the current squad’s potential: “If someone arrives, someone else must leave first.”

The winter transfer window will run from January 2nd to February 2nd, 2026 - giving the Blanquiazules just a month to sort their business. Not much time to get their ducks in a row, but that’s the nature of the January transfer window, innit?
