New Year Boost for Cultural Leonesa as Captain Rodri Suárez Set for Return
Leonesa's defensive rock Rodri Suárez poised to reclaim his starting spot after missing five crucial matches through injury, just in time for a relegation six-pointer.
Cultural Leonesa are set to receive a massive boost with captain Rodrigo ‘Rodri’ Suárez expected to return to the starting lineup when league competition resumes in the new year after recovering from a right abductor injury.
Captain’s Absence Felt
The influential skipper has been sidelined since picking up the injury against Granada, missing five crucial fixtures across LaLiga Hypermotion and two Copa del Rey ties against Andorra and Levante. Despite returning to the squad for the recent match at Estadio Gran Canaria against Las Palmas, manager José Ángel Ziganda opted to stick with the central defensive pairing of Matía Barzic and Portuguese defender Tomás Ribeiro.
However, defensive frailties, particularly at set-pieces and during transitions, have convinced the gaffer that changes are needed at the back. The timing couldn’t be better with a proper six-pointer coming up at Reino de León against fellow promotion side Real Sociedad B – a match that already feels like a relegation dogfight despite not even reaching the halfway point of the season.
Defensive Reshuffle on the Cards
Suárez’s physicality and no-nonsense defending have been sorely missed in the heart of defence. His ability to dominate aerial duels made him an unexpected but undisputed starter before his injury layoff. All signs point to him slotting back alongside Barzic when league action returns.
The captain’s return isn’t the only positive news on the injury front for Cultural Leonesa:
- Eneko Satrústegui is also back in full training after overcoming a complicated knee injury that’s kept him out since the opening day fixture in Burgos
- Despite being a key figure in last season’s promotion campaign under Raúl Llona, Satrústegui will need to be patient for his chance after such a lengthy absence
- Quique Fornos, another promotion hero, continues to find opportunities limited mostly to Copa del Rey appearances, where he did manage to score against Andorra
With these returning players, Leonesa will be hoping to shore up their defensive issues as they battle to establish themselves in Spain’s second tier.
