Oviedo's transfer dilemma: Squad exits needed before January reinforcements can arrive
Real Oviedo must offload players before making any winter signings, with attacking reinforcements desperately needed for LaLiga's second-lowest scorers.
Real Oviedo find themselves between a rock and a hard place as they desperately seek reinforcements to aid their survival battle in Spain’s top flight.
Squad clearout required
The relegation-threatened outfit currently have all 25 squad places filled, meaning they’ll need to shift some deadwood before bringing in any fresh talent during the January transfer window.
Prime candidates for the chopping block include:
- Brandon Domingues - The French winger hasn’t played a single minute in the league since arriving last summer
- Salomón Rondón - Despite being the club’s top scorer with a measly two goals, the Venezuelan striker could make a swift return to Mexican football, having only arrived in Asturias a few months ago at the specific request of Grupo Pachuca president Jesús Martínez
Desperate for firepower
Oviedo’s attacking woes make for grim reading:
- Just 7 goals scored in their opening 17 matches - one of the worst attacking records in Primera División history at this stage
- Four consecutive 0-0 draws at their Carlos Tartiere home ground
- Found the net in only four matches all season
No wonder attacking reinforcements are top priority for January 2026!
Fonseca deal close
Uruguayan midfielder Nicolás Fonseca looks set to become Oviedo’s first winter signing under manager Guillermo Almada. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder would arrive on loan from Club León in Mexico.
Fonseca brings international experience, having represented Uruguay at senior level, and previously wore the famous River Plate shirt in Argentina.
Back to work
Currently languishing in 19th place with just 11 points, Oviedo return to training this Sunday at their El Requexón base. They’ll be preparing for their next fixture away at Deportivo Alavés on Sunday, January 4th (18:30 kick-off).
It’s going to be a proper squeaky bum time for the Carbayones as they battle to avoid the drop. They’ll need more than a couple of January signings to turn this ship around, I tell ya!
