Rayo Vallecano's finishing nightmare: The xG kings who can't score
Rayo are creating chances at an impressive rate but have scored just 13 La Liga goals - the biggest underperformance against xG in the entire division
Scoring drought has Vallecas faithful pulling their hair out as stats reveal Rayo should have nearly twice as many goals based on chances created.
The brutal numbers
Rayo Vallecano’s finishing woes have reached critical levels, with just one solitary goal in their last seven La Liga matches - and that came from defender Nobel Mendy from a corner against Valencia. Talk about being down on your luck!
The stats paint a grim picture:
- Only 13 goals from 77 shots on target (nearly 6 shots on target needed per goal)
- 231 total shots (7th highest in La Liga) - roughly 17 attempts per goal
- Just 4 goals in 7 home matches at Vallecas
- 9 goals in 10 away fixtures
Only Oviedo have a marginally worse conversion rate with 7 goals from 46 shots on target.
The xG puzzle
The most telling stat is the massive gap between Rayo’s expected goals (xG) and their actual output. According to xG metrics - which measure chance quality based on factors like shot position, distance, and defensive pressure - Iñigo Pérez’s men should have scored between 23-25 goals.
That’s a staggering 10-12 goal underperformance - the largest negative differential in La Liga. No team in the division is falling shorter of their expected output than the Vallecas outfit.
A curious European contrast
Here’s where it gets proper strange - Rayo’s finishing problems seem confined to domestic competition. In the UEFA Conference League, they’ve netted the same number of goals (13) from less than half the shots on target (35) compared to their La Liga tally.
The gaffer’s take
Manager Iñigo Pérez has addressed the issue, suggesting it’s not a mental block but rather a matter of composure: “It has more to do with finesse, having measure, calm and patience in the final phase to get it right.”
He acknowledges the statistics, adding that they align with his own perception: “We have many chances and we don’t convert.”
If Rayo can find their shooting boots after the Christmas break, they might finally start climbing the table. Otherwise, it’s going to be a long old season at Vallecas, innit?
