Satrústegui's return gives Ziganda a defensive headache at Cultural Leonesa

Cultural Leonesa's defensive options swell as Eneko Satrústegui returns from knee surgery, potentially triggering January moves with Quique Fornos linked to Cartagena.

Ziganda suddenly spoilt for choice at the back as key promotion defender returns to the fold

Talk about being flush with options! Cultural Leonesa’s defensive department is starting to look more crowded than the Northern Line at rush hour as Eneko Satrústegui makes his long-awaited return to full training.

The comeback trail

The Navarrese centre-back, who was absolutely crucial in Cultural’s promotion-winning campaign last season, has finally rejoined group training after a frustrating spell on the sidelines. Satrústegui’s troubles began in pre-season when knee problems limited his preparation, allowing him just a single league appearance before requiring arthroscopic surgery to sort the issue properly.

Defensive logjam

His return creates quite the selection puzzle for gaffer José Ángel Ziganda heading into 2026, with the boss now having a proper embarrassment of riches at centre-half:

  • Captain Rodri Suárez (recently back from a muscle injury himself)
  • Croatian U21 international Barzic
  • Portuguese defender Tomás Ribeiro
  • Promotion hero Quique Fornos
  • The returning Satrústegui

That’s five proper centre-backs fighting for two spots, not to mention utility players like Sergi Maestre and Nico Toca who can fill in there if needed. Proper competition, that.

January movements?

All this defensive depth has unsurprisingly sparked transfer speculation, with Quique Fornos reportedly catching the eye of Primera RFEF Group II side Cartagena. The Galician defender might fancy his chances of regular minutes elsewhere given the new logjam at the Reino de León.

With the January window on the horizon, Cultural’s brass might need to have a butcher’s hook at trimming the squad, particularly in central defence where they’ve suddenly gone from short to sorted in double-quick time.

Ziganda now faces the type of selection headache managers claim to welcome – though making those phone calls to the lads who won’t make the matchday squad might be less enjoyable.
