Fonseca jets in to bolster Oviedo's midfield - but must wait for debut
Uruguayan midfielder Nicolás Fonseca joins Real Oviedo on loan from Club León, though registration issues mean he'll have to bide his time before making his first appearance.
The son of Uruguayan legend Daniel Fonseca has arrived at the Carlos Tartiere to add some much-needed steel to Real Oviedo’s engine room, but registration hurdles mean fans will have to wait to see him in action.
Loan deal secured
Nicolás Fonseca, 28, joins Real Oviedo on loan from Mexican outfit Club León until the end of the season. The defensive midfielder arrives as a personal recommendation from Rafael Monge, advisor to Pachuca Group president Jesús Martínez.
The Uruguayan’s primary mission is crystal clear – shore up a midfield that’s been looking shakier than a drunk on an ice rink this season. Oviedo are banking on his physicality and tactical discipline to provide the balance they’ve been crying out for.
Registration roadblock
There’s a spanner in the works, however. With all 25 squad places currently occupied, Oviedo must offload at least one player before Fonseca can be officially registered. Despite this administrative hurdle, he’ll be at El Requexón this Sunday to begin training under Guillermo Almada’s watchful eye.
The club are working to resolve the situation before their January 4th clash with Alavés at Mendizorroza. Moldovan and Brandon Domingues appear to be the most likely departures, though other exits remain possible.
Italian-born, World Cup dreams
Fonseca’s Italian birth gives him a crucial advantage, allowing him to occupy a European Union spot rather than counting as a non-EU player. His career path has seen him develop at Novara before stints with River Plate (Uruguay), Wanderers, and the Argentine giants River Plate.
In Mexico’s recent Apertura tournament, he established himself as a key figure for León, racking up 15 appearances and 1,135 minutes of playing time.
Beyond helping Oviedo secure top-flight survival, Fonseca harbours international ambitions. He’s hoping impressive performances in Spain might catch the eye of Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
More transfer activity brewing
Fonseca represents just the opening move in Oviedo’s January transfer strategy. The club continues to monitor potential reinforcements, with Greek striker Giorgios Giakoumakis remaining a target despite complications.
Currently on loan at PAOK from Cruz Azul, Giakoumakis has netted nine goals in 20 matches for the Greek title contenders. While prising him away mid-season presents challenges, direct discussions in Mexico could potentially unlock the situation.
