Las Palmas working to terminate Marc Cardona's contract as January clearout begins

The Canary Islanders are making space for new attacking talent with Cardona set to follow Jaime Mata out the door, while youngster Adam Arvelo is also heading for a loan move.

Las Palmas are busy reshuffling their deck as the January transfer window approaches, with Marc Cardona’s contract termination currently on the negotiating table.

One in, one out policy

The Canary Islanders’ sporting director Luis Helguera is focused on strengthening the squad next month, particularly in attacking areas. While the defence has been ticking along nicely, the forward line needs a proper shake-up.

Helguera has already secured Benedetti and is expected to add winger Estanis plus another centre-forward to the mix. But to make room for these new faces, some current players must make way.

As previously reported, both Jaime Mata and Marc Cardona were identified as surplus to requirements. Mata has already sorted his exit, and now the club is working on freeing up Cardona’s squad place too.

Cardona frozen out

The Catalan striker has fallen completely out of favour under Luis García, with the numbers telling the story - a measly 134 minutes of playing time this season. Bit of a mare for the lad, truth be told.

Cardona’s situation mirrors Mata’s in more ways than one. His contract expires on June 30th, and Las Palmas are keen to reach an agreement for an early termination, allowing them to register one of their new signings in his place.

Youth prospect heading out on loan

The January exodus doesn’t end with Cardona. Adam Arvelo, who only arrived from Sporting Lisbon last summer, is also on his way out - albeit temporarily.

The youngster finally made his debut in Saturday’s match against Cultural Leonesa, though it was hardly a proper introduction to the fans. He came on in the 89th minute with Las Palmas already cruising at 4-0.

Initially, the club’s technical staff had planned to develop Arvelo within the first-team squad. However, they’ve had a change of heart and now believe a loan move would better serve his development, giving him the regular competitive minutes he needs.

With the defence solid but attacking options needing a refresh, Las Palmas are showing they’re not afraid to be ruthless in pursuit of improvement. January promises to be a busy month in Gran Canaria.
