Oviedo turns back the clock with star-studded legends match

Over 120 former Real Oviedo players spanning the club's 100-year history will reunite for a special triangular tournament featuring legends like Cazorla, Michu and Dely Valdés.

The blue half of Asturias prepares for a nostalgia-soaked celebration as Real Oviedo assembles a century’s worth of footballing talent for a special ‘Legends Match’ event.

Star-studded lineup

More than 120 former Oviedo players will grace the Tartiere pitch once more, with a roster that reads like a who’s who of the club’s illustrious past. We’re talking proper talent here - Esteban, Abel Xavier, Jerkan, Dely Valdés, Carlos Muñoz, Michu, and Santi Cazorla among others. It’s a lineup that would have current fans signing on the dotted line faster than you can say “promotion push”.

The gathering spans every era of the club’s century-long existence:

  • Eternal club icons like Marianín
  • Heroes from the 87-88 promotion campaign
  • Stars from the golden Primera División years
  • Veterans of the historic European tie against Genoa
  • The grafters who pulled the club through its darkest days

The women’s game gets its deserved recognition too, with Yoli Chamorro, Carol Fernández and Sheila González representing Oviedo Femenino.

Day of celebration

The festivities kick off in the morning with an autograph session at the Príncipe Felipe Auditorium, before the main event at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium - a triangular tournament featuring 35-minute matches between three teams named after the grounds that have hosted Oviedo throughout their history: Teatinos, Buenavista and Carlos Tartiere.

The squads

Each team boasts a mouth-watering array of talent spanning different eras:

Team Teatinos features goalkeeping legend Esteban, defensive rock Abel Xavier, Colombian striker Dely Valdés, and current Córdoba manager Iván Ania among others.

Team Buenavista includes goalkeeper Mora, fan-favorite Michu, Carlos Muñoz, and women’s star Yoli.

Team Carlos Tartiere arguably packs the most star power with Jerkan, Arsenal legend Santi Cazorla, cult hero Cervero, and women’s representative Carol in their ranks.

For the Oviedo faithful, it’s a chance to see their heroes in the flesh once more - a proper trip down memory lane. For us neutral observers, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the rich tapestry of a club that’s seen the highest highs and lowest lows of Spanish football. Proper football heritage on display, innit?
