Rayo pull off clever VAR-less appeal as Unai López's yellow card rescinded
Rayo Vallecano successfully challenged a booking against Unai López due to referee's poor wording in match report, resetting his disciplinary counter.
Rayo Vallecano have managed a bit of bureaucratic brilliance, getting midfielder Unai López’s yellow card against Elche wiped from the record books thanks to some eagle-eyed legal work spotting a referee’s paperwork blunder.
The incident in question
During Sunday’s clash with Elche, López was booked in the 57th minute for what appeared to be a clear foul on Germán Valera. The Elche player reached the ball first and jumped to avoid López’s challenge, eventually tumbling to the ground in the process.
Referee Cordero Vega showed López a yellow card for denying a promising attack - a decision that seemed straightforward to most observers. López himself protested the call, repeatedly claiming he hadn’t made contact.
The linguistic loophole
Here’s where it gets proper interesting. In Spanish football, the devil’s in the details, innit? The club’s legal team spotted that Cordero Vega had written in his match report that López committed a “derribo” (a takedown or bringing down) of the opponent.
Rayo’s lawyers pounced on this terminology like a hungry striker on a loose ball, arguing that without physical contact - which video evidence confirmed - there couldn’t legally be a “derribo”. Bit of a masterstroke from the legal boffins at Vallecas!
Committee agrees
The RFEF Disciplinary Committee reviewed the evidence and on Friday ruled in Rayo’s favor, stating:
“After careful review of the submitted evidence, this Committee acknowledges that the incident as described in the match report did not occur. Therefore, we accept the appeal and nullify the shown yellow card.”
Clean slate benefits
The timing couldn’t be better for López, who had already served a one-match suspension against Real Betis after accumulating enough yellows to trigger a ban. With this card now rescinded, his disciplinary counter for the next cycle returns to zero.
This cheeky bit of admin football from Rayo shows that sometimes the most important plays happen off the pitch. Talk about finding a loophole and driving a bus through it - the Vallecas outfit have played a blinder here!
