Madrid's midfield maestro hunt: Los Blancos eyeing a new 'cerebro' for 2026

With Modric and Kroos departed, Real Madrid are struggling to find a new midfield conductor. Xabi Alonso's squad lacks the creative hub that defined their golden era.

Real Madrid are closing out 2025 with a glaring hole in their squad where the brains of their operation should be.

Missing the maestros

The departure of Luka Modric this past summer, following Toni Kroos’s exit a year earlier, has left Los Blancos without a proper midfield orchestrator. The brass at the Bernabéu gambled on the existing squad having enough quality to fill those legendary boots, but it’s becoming painfully obvious that no one has stepped up to the plate.

Xabi Alonso has tried several options, with Arda Güler being his primary experiment. The Turkish wonderkid has been deployed in a deeper role but seems to be losing his sparkle the further he plays from goal. While he remains the only player to feature in all 25 matches this season, he’s only seventh in total minutes and was notably benched against Manchester City.

The current contenders

Several players have auditioned for the conductor’s role with mixed results:

  • Eduardo Camavinga - Versatile but unsettled, he’s been shifted between right flank, pivot (when Tchouaméni is unavailable), and interior positions. Despite a standout performance in El Clásico, an early-season ankle injury has hampered his consistency.

  • Dani Ceballos - A natural playmaker on paper, but Xabi hasn’t fancied him much. Started against City but has barely had a look-in otherwise, now sitting out five consecutive matches without a single minute.

  • Federico Valverde - Inherited Kroos’s number but not his role. Has been filling in at right-back during the injury crisis and hasn’t taken command when returned to midfield. Xabi has compared him to Gerrard, but playing deeper limits his goal threat.

  • Jude Bellingham - Still searching for his best position under the new gaffer. Has featured on the left in a front three or as a number 10 behind two strikers, but hasn’t truly conducted proceedings. Xabi stated early in his tenure: “I see him clearly as a midfielder.”

Summer shopping list

A recent MARCA poll showed the fans are crying out for midfield reinforcements. Martin Zubimendi was previously linked as an ideal profile, but he’d already committed to Arsenal before Madrid could make their move.

The club will use the second half of the season to draw final conclusions, though many in the corridors of power believe they’ve already seen enough to know what’s needed - a proper brain for the operation in 2026.

For now, it’s a case of “Bob’s your uncle” if someone steps up internally, but the smart money’s on Madrid splashing the cash come summer.
