Cádiz secure loan deal for Newcastle's Antoñito Cordero after Belgian struggles
The 19-year-old Spanish talent returns to his homeland after limited opportunities at Westerlo, with Cádiz beating several Segunda División clubs to his signature.
Newcastle United’s Spanish prospect Antoñito Cordero is heading back to his homeland, with Cádiz securing a loan deal until the end of the season after the youngster’s disappointing spell in Belgium.
Belgian nightmare ends
It was always going to be a proper mare for a player of Cordero’s quality to be stuck warming the bench in Belgium. The 19-year-old international has barely had a sniff at Westerlo, making just seven league appearances without a single start. Bit of a waste of talent, if you ask me.
Newcastle clearly recognized they’d made a blunder with the initial loan arrangement and have been actively looking for a more suitable temporary home for their summer acquisition from Málaga.
Cádiz win the race
After more than a week of negotiations with the Magpies, Cádiz have managed to sort out a deal for the talented teenager. The Segunda División side weren’t the only ones keen on Cordero - in fact, they had to fend off interest from at least four other strong contenders, including Deportivo de La Coruña.
The deal is all but done, with just a few minor details to iron out before it’s officially announced. Both parties are hoping this arrangement will be mutually beneficial:
- Cordero gets regular playing time in a competitive environment
- Cádiz gain a quality reinforcement for their squad
- Newcastle see their prospect develop properly
Back to Spanish soil
This move represents a homecoming for Cordero, who only left Spanish football last summer when Newcastle snapped him up from Málaga before immediately shipping him off to the Jupiler Pro League.
For a player with international credentials despite his tender age, the return to familiar surroundings could be just what the doctor ordered to get his development back on track after a frustrating first half of the season.
Cádiz supporters will be hoping the teenager can showcase the talent that prompted Newcastle to invest in him in the first place, potentially helping their side’s ambitions in the second half of the campaign.
