Castellón secures Mabil's future with contract extension until 2028
The Australian winger commits long-term to the Segunda División side after becoming a key player since his arrival last winter.
Castellón have moved swiftly to end any uncertainty over the future of one of their most influential players, with Australian winger Awer Mabil penning a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2028.
From free transfer to fan favourite
Mabil joined the albinegros on a free in the 2024/25 winter window and immediately made his mark on the right flank. His impact was instant and impressive - becoming a difference-maker for the club as they successfully secured their Segunda División status last season.
The Aussie featured in 14 matches during that half-season spell, proving absolutely crucial in helping the Castellón lads maintain their second-tier status. Not bad for a fella who arrived for the grand total of nada!
Finding form again
While Mabil took his time getting going this term, recent weeks have seen him rediscover the sparkling form that made him such a hit last campaign. He’s cemented his place in the starting eleven and has appeared in 15 league matches so far, finding the back of the onion bag once during the goal-fest against Real Sociedad B.
This contract extension represents a significant statement of intent from the club, securing a player who could’ve walked away for free at the end of the current season.
Hernández back at the helm
In other news from Castalia, the squad returned to training on Monday following the Christmas break, with manager Pablo Hernández back in charge after recovering from kidney stones. The gaffer had missed Castellón’s final match of 2025 against Cádiz due to complications from this painful condition.
With his health troubles now behind him, Hernández will be back in the dugout for Saturday’s home fixture against Huesca at the SkyFi Castalia - the club’s first outing of 2026. The team will be looking to pick up where they left off, having put together an impressive run of five consecutive victories and seven unbeaten matches before their trip to Mirandilla.
