Málaga's training session draws bigger crowd than many Segunda División matches

Nearly 9,000 Málaga fans packed La Rosaleda for an open training session, creating an electric atmosphere as the squad returned from their Christmas break.

The Málaga faithful turned out in their thousands for an open training session, proving once again they’re among Spain’s most passionate supporters.

Stunning turnout at La Rosaleda

If you thought Segunda División supporters were lacking passion, you’d better have a butcher’s at what happened at La Rosaleda yesterday. Nearly 9,000 Málaga fans packed into the stadium for what was merely the squad’s first training session after the Christmas break.

The day began with more serious business - the always delicate General Shareholders’ Meeting and a subsequent press appearance by José María Muñoz. But the atmosphere transformed completely by 5pm when Sergio Pellicer’s men took to the hallowed turf.

For about an hour, players trained in this unusual setting, wrapped in a unique atmosphere that many Segunda clubs would be desperate for during actual matches. The session featured Christmas carols performed by María Santísima del Rocío’s band, Mexican waves, chants originating from the South End, banners, and constant attempts from fans to grab their heroes’ attention.

Fan favourites steal the show

Two players in particular received the lion’s share of affection from the stands:

  • David Larrubia - The number 10 was absolutely adored by the youngest supporters, who were captivated by his quality and confidence on the ball. Shouts for his shirt echoed repeatedly from different parts of the stadium.

  • Alfonso Herrero - The goalkeeper proved equally popular among the Málaga faithful.

The final stretch of training was filled with gestures towards the crowd. Players transformed into impromptu Three Kings (it is nearly January 6th, after all), tossing scarves, balls and sweets from the pitch. Many players completed a full lap of the ground, extending their connection with supporters through photos and autographs.

Manager feels the love

Even manager Funes couldn’t escape the public’s affection. He received clear requests from the stands: secure a victory in Gijón. The gaffer responded with a smile, “We’ll try with everything we’ve got,” clearly appreciative of the incredible support.

This extraordinary afternoon at La Rosaleda was characterized by closeness between players and fans, hope for the future, and an absolutely overflowing sense of Málaga pride. With support like this, who needs the top flight?
