Mayoral knee scare throws Getafe into striker crisis

Getafe's record goalscorer Borja Mayoral has suffered a knee problem, potentially leaving Bordalás desperately short of attacking options heading into 2026.

Getafe’s attacking options have been dealt a massive blow as star striker Borja Mayoral sits out training with a worrying knee problem that could sideline him for multiple matches.

Striker Shortage Looms

The Parla-born forward, who’s etched his name in club history as Getafe’s all-time top scorer in La Liga, was notably absent from Monday’s training session. While the club awaits a full medical assessment, it’s looking like curtains for his participation against local rivals Rayo Vallecano and potentially several fixtures into the new year.

This comes as absolutely shocking news for manager José Bordalás, who now finds himself in a proper pickle with attacking options. Mayoral isn’t just any player – he’s been the club’s leading marksman this season and represents their only specialist number nine.

As things stand, Bordalás can only call upon Juanmi and Liso as forward alternatives, leaving the squad looking thinner up top than a supermodel on a juice cleanse.

Transfer Implications

If Mayoral’s knee problem keeps him in the treatment room for an extended period, it could force Getafe’s hand in the upcoming transfer window. The club was already targeting at least one striker signing, but this setback might see them double down and bring in two new forwards to bolster their attacking options for the second half of the campaign.

Previous Knee Troubles

This isn’t the first time Mayoral’s knee has caused concern. The striker previously endured a serious knee injury two seasons ago that kept him on the sidelines for more than half the season. After opting for a conservative recovery approach, he managed to bounce back impressively, eventually breaking the goalscoring record previously held jointly by Manu del Moral and Jaime Mata.

Getafe fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that this latest setback isn’t a repeat of that nightmare scenario, as losing their main goal threat for any significant period could seriously derail their season.
