Ristic sidelined again: Celta defender's ninth injury raises serious questions about future

Serbian defender Aleksandar Ristic suffers yet another muscular issue, ruling him out of Valencia clash and likely ending hopes of contract renewal at Celta Vigo.

Celta Vigo’s injury-prone defender has been struck down yet again, with his contract running down and renewal prospects looking slimmer than a goalkeeper’s chance of winning the Pichichi trophy.

Ninth time unlucky

Celta announced on Monday that Aleksandar Ristic has suffered an overload/elongation of the hamstring in his right leg. The Serbian defender is now limited to restricted training and all signs point to him missing this Saturday’s clash against Valencia.

This marks the ninth injury Ristic has endured since joining Celta two and a half years ago, with most being muscular issues. In the current season alone, it’s his third physical setback.

These constant injury problems have prevented him from establishing any kind of consistency in the team, despite the recovery periods not being particularly lengthy. This season, he’s managed just nine appearances across all competitions, totalling a mere 661 minutes of playing time.

Contract situation looking bleak

With his current deal set to expire in June, the defender’s chances of securing a renewal with the Galician club are virtually non-existent. It’s a proper shame, as the lad clearly has ability, but his extensive injury record has been an absolute mare:

  • Just 36 official matches played in two and a half years
  • Three separate injuries in the current campaign alone
  • Predominantly muscular issues hampering his availability

The situation is particularly frustrating for Celta as Ristic has shown flashes of quality when fit. However, the club appears to have run out of patience with a player who spends more time in the treatment room than on the pitch.

For Ristic, now facing another spell on the sidelines, the focus will likely shift to rehabilitating properly and potentially securing a move elsewhere this summer when his contract expires.
