Santamaría's French connection failing to translate in Spanish soil

Valencia's surprise summer signing Baptiste Santamaría has struggled to make an impact in La Liga, despite predictions his style would suit Spanish football better than Ligue 1.

A summer gamble that hasn’t paid off as the veteran French midfielder finds himself increasingly sidelined at Mestalla.

The Surprise Arrival

When Valencia announced the signing of Baptiste Santamaría last summer, more than a few eyebrows were raised among the Mestalla faithful. The 30-year-old French midfielder arrived with little fanfare - a journeyman who’d spent most of his career in Ligue 1 with a brief Bundesliga detour, hardly the marquee signing fans were crying out for.

The deal itself was classic modern-day Valencia - economically tight, with the club prioritizing investment elsewhere while seeking a bargain ‘6’ to anchor the midfield. Santamaría ticked the affordability box, if nothing else.

The French Theory

The curious part of this transfer was the underlying logic. According to sources in France, Santamaría had actually been struggling with the increasing physicality of Ligue 1 in recent seasons. The thinking was that La Liga’s more technical nature would suit him better at this stage of his career.

Experts from French clubs told MARCA that Spain represented “his great opportunity” - a league where his technical abilities could shine without the same physical demands.

Reality Bites

Fast forward to mid-season, and that theory has been properly debunked. The Frenchman arrived at Valencia below the required fitness levels, according to the coaching staff’s initial assessments, and despite working hard to improve, his performances have steadily declined.

Santamaría’s stats tell the story:

  • Just 17 appearances across all competitions (15 in La Liga, 2 in Copa del Rey)
  • Under 900 total minutes played
  • 1 goal and 2 assists
  • Only one start in the past two months (a Copa del Rey match against Cartagena where he was sent off)

The Turning Point

If we’re looking for the moment when things went pear-shaped, the 4-0 hammering at the Bernabéu seems the obvious candidate. Since that painful defeat, manager Corberán has largely kept Santamaría warming the bench, bringing him on only sparingly when circumstances demand it.

What started as a regular starting role has devolved into that of an occasional substitute, leaving both player and club to wonder whether this particular French import was worth uncorking at all.
