Aritz Elustondo's Real Sociedad future hangs in the balance as contract winds down
La Real's loyal captain could be heading for the exit door with his contract expiring in June and no renewal talks underway.
Real Sociedad stalwart Aritz Elustondo faces uncertain future as contract enters final six months with no renewal in sight.
Captain in limbo
From Thursday, Real Sociedad’s Aritz Elustondo will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with any interested club as his current deal ticks down to its June 30th expiration date. The 31-year-old Beasain native, who previously expressed his desire to hang up his boots at his boyhood club, might be forced to look elsewhere if La Real don’t come to the table with a fresh offer.
It’s a proper head-scratcher for the San Sebastian outfit, considering Elustondo’s service record. The versatile defender has been on the books for over 11 years, making his debut back in December 2014 against Oviedo in a Copa del Rey clash. By the following season, despite technically still being registered with the B team, he’d already become a mainstay in the first-team setup, starting all but one of his 31 appearances that campaign.
La Real legend status
Elustondo recently celebrated his 300th appearance in the famous txuri-urdin (white and blue) colours – not too shabby for a local lad! Despite occasional injury troubles, he’s been a consistent performer throughout Imanol Alguacil’s reign:
- 27 appearances in Imanol’s first full season
- 28 in the following campaign
- A career-high 40 matches in 2021/22
- 36 games in 2022/23
- 25 appearances in each of the last two seasons
This term, he’s featured in half of Real Sociedad’s 20 competitive fixtures, starting five of those games. As one of the club’s four captains alongside Mikel Oyarzabal, Igor Zubeldia and Ander Barrenetxea, his leadership qualities are undeniable.
Decision time at Anoeta
Elustondo’s last contract extension came in March 2023, running until June 2026, but no amendments have been made since. The club brass now face three options: offer their loyal servant fresh terms, dip into the transfer market for a replacement, or promote promising youngster Luken Beitia from the reserve squad.
Word from the corridors of power suggests there’s still indecision about which path to take. For a player who’s given over a decade of service and expressed his wish to retire at the club, it would be a right kick in the Hampstead Heath if they let him walk away without so much as a conversation.
