Kirian's brave take: 'ACL harder to recover from than cancer'

Las Palmas midfielder Kirian Rodríguez opens up about his second battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma and his remarkable perspective on different recovery journeys.

Las Palmas midfielder Kirian Rodríguez has shared his extraordinary perspective on recovery, claiming that returning from an ACL injury is more challenging than bouncing back from cancer treatment.

Back in action

Two months after making his return to the pitch, the 29-year-old Las Palmas midfielder has been reflecting on his second battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Having previously fought the disease in 2022, Rodríguez has now conquered it twice and is back doing what he loves most.

Speaking to Radioestadio Noche, Kirian revealed he’s living a normal life now, though regular medical check-ups serve as stark reminders of his journey.

“I lead a normal life, but my medical reviews always bring me back to earth,” he explained.

A surprising comparison

In a statement that might raise a few eyebrows down the Dog and Duck, Rodríguez made a fascinating comparison between different recovery processes:

  • He believes recovering from an ACL rupture is actually more complicated than returning from cancer
  • His reasoning? Cancer treatment doesn’t directly affect muscle structure
  • While chemotherapy is incredibly intense, it doesn’t create the same physical hesitation when returning to action

Inspiring others

Rodríguez isn’t keeping his experiences to himself. He’s using his platform to connect with children facing similar battles:

  • He speaks openly about his cancer journey to help others
  • Particularly wants to be an example for young patients
  • Acknowledges parents often suffer the most during these ordeals

No fairy-tale ending needed

Despite having previously returned from illness to help Las Palmas earn promotion, Kirian isn’t chasing a Hollywood ending this time around. He’s simply focused on returning to his best form and living normally.

“Promotion wouldn’t be closing the circle. That happened last time when I returned for the final matches and we got promoted. My only circle now is returning to being myself and to normality,” he stated.

On and off the pitch, this Las Palmas warrior is walking without fear once again - a proper inspiration to the rest of us, ain’t he?
