LaLiga's Class of 2025: Yamal vs Mbappé rivalry defines Spanish football's year

A look at the standout performers and statistics from LaLiga in 2025, where Barcelona and Real Madrid's dominance continues with their star number 10s leading the way.

As the final LaLiga matchday of 2025 wraps up, the familiar Barcelona-Real Madrid duopoly remains firmly intact, with their respective wonderkids Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé establishing themselves as the defining rivalry in Spanish football.

The numbers game

While the usual suspects dominated the headlines, some traditional heavyweights like Villarreal and Betis had surprisingly quiet campaigns, failing to top any statistical categories despite making occasional podium appearances.

Between the sticks, three keepers stood head and shoulders above the rest:

  • Unai Simón (Athletic)
  • David Soria (Getafe)
  • Dmitrovic (Sevilla)

However, Barcelona claimed the most important metric - victories - with Eric García emerging as their talisman in this department. At the other end of the spectrum, Girona and Mario Martín (who split time between Valladolid and Getafe) racked up the most disappointing defeats.

Attack dominated by the big two

The attacking stats tell a familiar story. Barcelona and Mbappé monopolized goals and shots, with the Blaugrana particularly dominant in successful dribbles and goal assists. Lamine Yamal topped both categories, while Pedri pulled the strings with his passing.

Frenkie de Jong proved the most reliable distributor, though Real Madrid collectively made fewer passing errors than any other side. Barcelona’s impressive statistical haul also included:

  • Most ball recoveries (Pedri)
  • Most duels won (Lamine Yamal)
  • The Zamora trophy (Joan García, who started at Espanyol)

Defensive duties spread wider

Simeone’s Atlético, to nobody’s surprise, boasted the year’s stingiest defence. But other defensive metrics revealed some unexpected standouts.

Athletic Club led the league in interceptions and ball recoveries, with Betis featuring on both podiums. Alavés, backed by Getafe, topped the charts for duels won (both overall and aerial). Meanwhile, Mallorca, alongside Getafe and Betis, dominated aerial clearances with Raíllo as their defensive general.

Squad management and substitution kings

With fixture congestion becoming increasingly problematic, squad rotation proved crucial. Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Alavés each used 39 different players in the league campaign, while Atlético, Celta and Real Sociedad shuffled their starting XIs more than anyone else.

The fourth official’s best mates? That would be Fran Pérez (splitting time between Valencia and Rayo Vallecano) as the most used substitute, while Valencia’s Diego López earned the dubious honour of being subbed off more than any other player.
