Madrid's final session of the year focused on pressing and tactics

Real Madrid's squad trained without injured trio Carvajal, Trent, and Militao, plus Brahim on Africa Cup duty, as they prepare for crucial Betis clash.

Real Madrid wrapped up 2025 with an intensive training session at Valdebebas, focusing on pressing and tactical work ahead of their crucial Sunday clash with Real Betis.

Injury concerns continue

Xabi Alonso’s men returned to the privacy of their training complex after Tuesday’s packed open session at the Alfredo di Stéfano Stadium, but several key players remained unavailable:

  • Dani Carvajal, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Éder Militao all continued their rehabilitation from long-term injuries
  • Brahim Díaz was absent on international duty, starring for Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations

Brahim’s impressive performances have been instrumental in Morocco’s progression to the round of 16, where they’ll face Tanzania. His absence will be felt in Madrid’s opening fixtures of 2026.

Training details

After beginning in the gym, the squad moved outdoors where Alonso put them through their paces with:

  • Pressing drills
  • Tactical work
  • A 10-v-10 practice match

This session follows Tuesday’s more ceremonial open training that drew thousands of supporters to watch their heroes in action at the Di Stéfano.

Critical Betis clash ahead

Sunday’s 16:15 fixture against Real Betis takes on added importance as Los Blancos can’t afford to fall further behind Barcelona in the title race. Madrid will be looking to make it three league wins on the bounce after December victories against Alavés and Sevilla.

The Betis match represents a proper test to start the new year, and with several key players in the treatment room, Alonso will need his available squad members to be at their sharpest. The gaffer’s clearly focusing on pressing and tactical discipline – bread and butter stuff when you’re missing some big-name talent.
