Mbappé knee woe: Madrid star out for three weeks, set to miss Supercopa

Real Madrid's French forward Kylian Mbappé faces a three-week layoff after scans confirmed a left knee sprain, ruling him out of the Spanish Supercopa in Saudi Arabia.

French superstar forced to take a breather as knee troubles finally catch up with him, leaving Los Blancos short-staffed for upcoming fixtures.

Three-week setback confirmed

Kylian Mbappé’s knee troubles have finally caught up with him. The Real Madrid forward is set for a three-week spell on the sidelines after medical scans on Wednesday confirmed the French international has suffered a sprain in his left knee.

The injury news couldn’t have come at a worse time for Los Blancos, with the Spanish Supercopa tournament in Saudi Arabia just around the corner (January 7-11). Sunday’s La Liga clash against Real Betis will also come too soon for the summer signing.

According to reports from L’Equipe, Mbappé had been playing through discomfort in recent La Liga matches. While initially the medical team weren’t overly concerned, Wednesday’s scan results have prompted the club to take a cautious approach with their star asset.

Playing through pain

The former PSG man has apparently been struggling to hit top gear - quite literally - feeling unable to properly accelerate during matches. That’s a proper nightmare for a player whose bread and butter is leaving defenders for dead with his blistering pace.

What’s particularly telling is that Mbappé hasn’t missed a single match so far this season. The constant fixture load appears to have taken its toll on his knee, forcing Madrid’s hand in giving him this recovery period.

The club later confirmed the injury with a characteristically brief medical statement: “After tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprain in his left knee. Pending evolution.”

Recovery timeline

The big question now is whether Mbappé can beat the projected three-week recovery timeline. The Supercopa de España is definitely off the cards, but Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping his star forward can return sooner rather than later as Madrid continue to battle on multiple fronts.

With the business end of the season approaching, including the Champions League knockout stages, Madrid will be desperate to have their marquee signing back at full fitness. For now though, it’s a case of rest and rehabilitation for the Frenchman.
