Mika Mármol's Las Palmas future in doubt as contract saga looms
Las Palmas face another potential free transfer exit with Mika Mármol attracting top-flight interest, following the path of Valles, Muñoz and Cardona in recent years.
Las Palmas facing another contract headache as defender Mika Mármol could follow recent free transfer departures
Contract concerns mounting
January’s just around the corner and you know what that means in football - contract anxiety season! Las Palmas are staring down the barrel with a whopping 10 players whose deals expire next summer, all free to negotiate with other clubs from tomorrow.
Mika Mármol’s situation is giving the Canary Islanders particular grief. The talented Catalan defender has switched agents, throwing his future at the club into serious doubt. Club president Miguel Ángel Ramírez didn’t mince his words during the team dinner last night:
“Renewing Mika is very complicated,” he admitted, with several Primera División heavyweights circling like sharks.
History repeating itself?
This isn’t the first rodeo for Las Palmas when it comes to losing valuable assets on free transfers. It’s becoming a bit of a pattern:
- Last season: Javi Muñoz and Álvaro Valles both walked away for nothing after rejecting new contracts
- Two seasons ago: Sergi Cardona departed to Villarreal in similar circumstances
Cardona’s case offers a cautionary tale - after refusing to sign a new deal, he didn’t play a single minute for the remainder of his contract. The club now faces a similar dilemma with Mármol: continue selecting him until season’s end or banish him to the stands from Sunday onwards.
Other outgoings on the horizon
Meanwhile, Marc Cardona and Arvelo find themselves in different circumstances, with neither featuring in manager Luis García’s plans.
Ramírez addressed Cardona’s situation: “We’re not sure if Marc will leave, but another player will depart in the coming days, and we’ll see what happens with Marc.”
What’s crystal clear is that Las Palmas need to free up a registration spot for the striker they’re keen to bring in during the January window.
The situation’s looking a bit Pete Tong for the islanders, with the possibility of losing another talented player for absolutely nada. Their contract management has been proper dodgy in recent years - three times bitten, four times shy?
