Solomon cuts Villarreal spell short as Fiorentina move beckons

Israeli winger Manor Solomon activates release clause to end disappointing Villarreal loan, with just one goal in 11 appearances before heading to Serie A.

Manor Solomon is set to become the second January departure from Villarreal, with the Israeli international heading to Florence for a fresh start.

Loan spell comes to premature end

The on-loan Tottenham winger has triggered an exit clause in his season-long loan agreement, allowing him to leave the Yellow Submarine unilaterally during the winter window. This follows hot on the heels of Adriá Altimira’s contract termination at the Castellón club.

Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Solomon will be trading La Liga for Serie A, with Fiorentina his destination of choice. The move hardly comes as a shock to those at Villarreal, who were well aware of the player’s intentions.

Failed to make his mark

Solomon arrived at the Estadio de la Cerámica as a deadline day addition last summer, joining from Spurs with hopes of revitalizing his career after struggling for minutes in North London. Unfortunately, things haven’t exactly gone swimmingly in Spain either:

  • Just 11 appearances across all competitions
  • Only 3 starts under Marcelino
  • A solitary goal and one assist to his name
  • Gradually fell further down the pecking order

The 25-year-old never managed to convince Marcelino of his worth, becoming an increasingly peripheral figure as the season progressed. His departure had been on the cards for weeks, with playing time at an absolute premium.

Replacement already lined up

Villarreal aren’t hanging about in the transfer market, mind. They’ve already sorted a replacement with Argentine talent Thiago Fernández arriving from Vélez Sarsfield. The club is expected to officially announce his signing imminently.

For Solomon, it’s another chance to kickstart a career that’s stalled since his promising days at Shakhtar Donetsk. The Viola will be hoping they can extract the talent that’s clearly there but has remained largely untapped during his spells in England and Spain.
