Betis' 2026 transfer puzzle: Clear path for Bakambu and Rodriguez, question marks over Adrian and Amrabat
Betis face key decisions with three players out of contract in June and Amrabat's loan situation unresolved as the January transfer window opens.
The January transfer window opens with Real Betis facing crucial decisions on several players whose contracts expire this summer, while the club navigates potential winter business to strengthen Pellegrini’s squad.
Out of contract: The definites
For Ricardo Rodriguez and Cédric Bakambu, the writing’s on the wall. Both veterans know they’re entering their final six months at the Benito Villamarín with no renewal offers forthcoming.
The 33-year-old Swiss defender will likely see out his contract before bidding farewell to the Andalusian outfit, joining the select group of Betis players who’ve featured in World Cups. Meanwhile, Bakambu (34) could potentially depart even sooner if suitable offers materialize during this January window.
The club’s strategy is crystal clear - free up these positions to bring in younger profiles with greater potential. Betis are keen to upgrade at both left-back and centre-forward positions as they look to the future.
The Adrian question
Things get a bit more complicated with Adrian San Miguel. The goalkeeper’s contract also expires in June, but his situation remains unresolved. The Seville-born shot-stopper’s importance in the dressing room and the balance Pellegrini seems to have found in the goalkeeper department means his future isn’t as straightforward as his aging teammates.
The Amrabat situation
Sofyan Amrabat presents another interesting case. Currently the only loan player in Betis’ squad, the Moroccan midfielder arrived from Fenerbahçe without a purchase option included in the deal.
Currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Amrabat has been a nailed-on starter whenever available for Pellegrini. It wouldn’t be surprising if Sporting Director Manu Fajardo attempts to negotiate a permanent deal with the Turkish club before June.
January movements?
With two clear departures, one undecided case, and Amrabat’s situation to resolve, Betis enter 2026 with plenty on their plate. The potential exits of Chimy Ávila or an early departure for Bakambu could open the door for a new striker this January.
This would allow the club to get ahead of the game on a move that would otherwise certainly happen in the summer when those squad places officially become available. Bit of a no-brainer if they can pull it off, if you ask me.
