Córdoba kick off winter window by snapping up Diego Percan on a free

Former Barcelona B forward Diego Percan becomes Córdoba's first January signing as the Segunda División side strengthen their attacking options for the promotion push.

Córdoba CF have wasted no time getting their January business underway, announcing the arrival of striker Diego Percan on a free transfer just hours after confirming manager Iván Ania has penned a new deal.

Who is Diego Percan?

The 24-year-old forward, whose sporting name cleverly combines the first syllables of his surnames (Pertejo Canseco), arrives after terminating his contract with Polish top-flight side Arka Gdynia earlier this week.

Percan is looking to rebuild his career after suffering a nasty cruciate ligament injury in April 2024 while at Barcelona Atlètic. The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the promising striker had been making decent progress with Barça’s B team after they paid a transfer fee to sign him in summer 2023.

Career trajectory

The León native had previously caught the eye at Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, where he netted 8 goals during an impressive 2022-23 campaign in Primera Federación. His form earned him a move to Barcelona’s reserve side, where he was finding his feet with 5 goals before that devastating knee injury derailed his progress.

Interestingly, Percan was part of the Barcelona Atlètic squad that lost the promotion playoff final to none other than Córdoba at El Arcángel – though he wasn’t available for that clash due to his injury.

Fresh start

The 2024-25 season was essentially a write-off for Percan, managing just two league appearances in May as he recovered from surgery. His subsequent move to Poland didn’t quite work out either, with the striker playing less than 300 minutes across all competitions without finding the net.

Córdoba clearly see something in the young forward though, tying him down until 2027. The club describes him as “a player with potential, versatile across the attack, powerful with great dribbling ability” while highlighting his “competitive spirit and commitment on the pitch.”

With Percan through the door, Córdoba fans will be hoping he’s the first of several winter additions as they look to strengthen their squad for the business end of the season.
